In Beirut, determined more strongly than usual by external parameters. Topography, limits the expansion of the city, the after-effects of the war on the architectural heritage are unmistakable, growth pressure and economic interests affect the historical buildings.

The various urban building blocks of the city bear witness to the diversity of the city, but also to the segregation of soci- ety: Villas in the mountains, con- ference and hotel complexes on the coastline, Italian Renaissance style building in the city center stand beside the 1960's ar- chitecture and slums.

Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, has spectacular nature, rich religious legacy and vibrant culture. It also faces series of problems: lack of public infra- structure, privatization of public space, corrupt politics, or the refugee crisis. We will observe, map, critically evaluate and visualize these various layers.

Whether it is a lack of living space, an explosion in rents, luxury housing, gentrification or overloaded traffic areas, many of the current issues of urban development are causally linked to land as a central resource.

Hardly any other type of housing estate has been transformed more in the last 30 years than the large East German housing estate! In this seminar, we want to examine how the shrinking process was controlled and planned, which spatial strategies were used and which can be classified as successful.

During a three-week long work- store 30 young professionals - architects, urban planners, urban economist, traffic en- gineers, landscape designers and artists - from all around the world will work in mixed teams. Topic of the session in 2020 is the transformation of prefabricated settlements in Irkutsk / Russia.

Developing concise ideas and clear concepts are the basis for successful design work in architecture and urban planning. The impromptu course is intended to train conceptual design work.

In addition to an introduction to regional planning and state planning, the focus is on general urban planning law in the Federal Republic of Germany. This includes urban land-use planning (land-use plan, development plan) and its safeguarding as well as the other structural use of land.
