
The lecture teaches the basics of urban development, urban and landscape planning. Methods of perception, critical observation, representation and interpretation of urban situations are taught. The course provides the necessary content-related and theoretical foundations for design work in the "Studio Kontext". Design-relevant topics are discussed and analyzed using concrete examples and applied in the form of small exercises.

In accordance with the Athens Charter, our cities in the 20th century were strongly characterized by a separation of functions and densification, with a dominance of motorized private transport and high energy consumption. This does not correspond to our current goals of a mixed-use and climate-friendly city. In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change are radically changing the way we live. What conclusions can we draw from these changes for our urban structure? In the studio context, forward-looking ideas and alternative models for living in new communities are to be developed using urban planning concepts.

The depiction of public urban life is at the center of the artistic statement. The seminar aims to discuss the collective emotions in urban space and the images of different urban atmospheres: How do we reflect on such urban scenes today?
